We left Sydney via the freeway and into Woolongong.
We parked the van up near the lighthouse, looked around there and went for a quick walk. We discovered there was a free bus around so took the bus into town and went for a walk up the mall, went to Woolies and headed back on the bus.
We returned to our caravan, parked on the grassy hills overlooking the beach. It is really starting to annoy me the views I am subjected too when I have lunch! (jokes). It is so easy having the van all the time to go in and make food.
Woolongong was lovely. Beautiful water, great paths and about 15 ships sitting out on the horizon waiting to come into dock (coal).
We left Woolongong and headed for Kiama.
Kiama was my favourite spot so far on the trip!
There seems to be the “monopoly” in van parks (Kiama Coast) like Tweed (Tweed Coast). So it was pay $54/night or go elsewhere, but I really wanted power to watch Packed to the Rafters (priorities). Requiring power we bit the bullet and stayed the night. And as you would probably guess, I did tell the fella that was running the place that it was the dearest van park so far! He was pretty nice.
We got given a grass site so asked for the nice slab one – well if we are paying that much money I expect the best.
We set up and took the kids down to the beach (right next door) for them to have a swim with their boogie boards. Too cold for me again L Rod and I sat on the beach and watched the boys play nicely, for once, in the surf as their lips turned blue.
We went back to the van park and they had nice hot showers and we went for a drive through town and out to the Big Blow Hole. It wasn’t at its best but still great to see. There was yet another lighthouse there, which I don’t get sick of seeing. It is great seeing the history in these places and what year everything was built. Kiama had about 8 old buildings including The Lighthouse (1887), Post Office (1887) Courthouse (1860), Westpac Bank (1888) and The Terrace Houses (1886). For some reason the Post Office was painted disgusting pink, perhaps they call it salmon.
We returned to the van and cooked dinner just in time to head up to the amazing camp kitchen to watch Packed to the Rafters. Guess what? They don’t get channel 7!!!! So Rod and I started watching the movie on tv until we returned to our van for bed.
The next morning Rod and I went for a big walk along the cemented footpaths all the way from the van park to the blow hole and through town. About 3.8km round trip. The views were amazing and the water looked magical.
We were going to stay another night, after cutting the managers a deal (don’t charge us for the kids) making it a lot cheaper, however we would have had to move sites and Rod wasn’t keen. So we packed up and headed up to Minnamurra River fishing (just north of Kiama).
I can’t keep telling you, but I will, it was a beautiful spot! Right where the rolling green hills go all the way down to where the beach meets the river mouth. We had to wade through the water (knee depth) to get to the big sand bar in the middle to fish. Rod was the only lucky one catching a dusky flathead.
Rod and the boys filleted and bagged it up and we sat in the park, along the river overlooking these magical waters, and had lunch.
We left Kiama passing through Jamberoo, Albion Park, Robertson and Moss Vale. We discovered a VERY steep range with many twists. It leaves the Gillies (very twisty mountain near Cairns) for dead. At one point we did a 180° turn in the road, twice, and I was wondering if there would be enough turning room for us and the van. Thank god Rod’s been driving the whole time. Patty (our Patrol) struggled on this range.
All things aside it was a beautiful drive and the views you got, often between the trees, were amazing. You could see all of Kiama and surrounds and the ocean.
Talking about the scenery and looking at all the dairy cows Rod and i kept saying it’d be nice to come across a cheese factory. Well at the top of the range at Robertson, guess what? A cheese factory! We stopped and grabbed a few cheeses for snacks.
We continued on towards Canberra arriving just after 5 (Qld time) and checked ourselves into the Showgrounds.
