We set up in Canberra and of course got chatting to the neighbours. So where are you from is usually the ice breaker! They were from Samford (in Brisbane). Yes we have friends there, chat, chat, chat... no didn’t know them. We said we stayed in Dayboro and they ask “Oh who do you know there?” We say “The Heathwoods” and he smiles and says “Which ones?” We reply “Clinton and Sonya”.... yes he knows them well. So we spend a late night chatting to Shane and Jayne.
The next day got up and got ready to look around Canberra. Everyone around us was saying they were going to the Australian War Memorial I thought maybe I should do the same thing. It’d take one hour and be one room, but at least I could say I’d been.
Well we got there and holy dooly. It was massive and amazing. Very well displayed and so much information and history; free as well. Unfortunately the kids were whinging that we didn’t get to see it all, but will return kid free one day. From the War Memorial we went to Questacon. It was $60 for the family and while the kids enjoyed it rod and I thought it was overpriced. However a couple hours there and the kids were happy.
We returned to the van after a quick storm hit the city, hoping our clothes were not lying on the ground, in the dirt wet. We were lucky. A big day was ended with cuppas and chats with our new found neighbours.
The next day we had to be gone by 12noon. So we thought we would squeeze a few more sightseeing trips in. Off to Telstra Tower we went. They didn’t have eftpos so we literally scrounged $17 from the car and my bag to meet the entry fee. It was a great view from up top however with a little cloud cover and drizzle, it was also a little cold.
We left there and looked at the book to see what other sightseeing activities were in Canberra, preferably free. We decided on the Australian Mint. It was well presented and recently refurbished. Some great history there too.
