25. Tasmania - Davenport

Up very early and very excited and very cold we headed for Station Pier.

I was pumped going on a big boat and it looked huge, for us anyway. We lined up with the millions of other caravans and watched the sunrise and hot air balloons in the sky.

After tips of getting a lounge seat before everyone else we gave the kids a phone and as soon as we drove on board got them to run up and grab a good seat. That they did. We sat in the corner on a lounge seat and even had a shelf behind us to store all our stuff.

It wasn’t until we were up in our seats that we then realised there was a massive cruise boat that had come into dock – The Arcadia. The boys had questions about the boat, where it was from, how big it was, how much did it cost, etc, so we googled some information and compared the cost and size of the Arcadia to The Spirit of Tasmania, to put things into perspective.

It was fantastic boating weather, nice and smooth, until about lunch time when the boat started to rock a little. I gave the boys 2 phenergen each and they both slept well; Rhys for just over 3 hours. They needed it, so did I.

We ate the food we had packed, to try and save money, but this man had a hot meat pie that smelt sooo good. So we splurged and bought 4 pies for lunch.

We arrived a little late into Devonport (6.30pm) and unloaded. We had heard about a free camp in John St so that is where we parked up for the night. We were so tired by this time that wanting to cook was not an option. We went for a quick drive to Devonport (we were staying in East Devonport) to find somewhere to eat.

With short tempers and sleep deprivation setting in we stopped at the first pizza shop and paid $15 per pizza for dinner. Went back to the van, ate and went to sleep.

The next day we woke up and packed up ready to check into a caravan park for some down time and to work out our plan of attack.

We drove down to the Big 4 – Discover Holiday Park but they wouldn’t let us check in; even though there were plenty of sites. We just wanted a shower. So we parked up at the park and cooked bacon and eggs along the waterfront and watched the Spirit of Tasmania depart. I always get excited watching boats– the boys didn’t.

We checked in and had long hot showers, which you always seem to enjoy more when it is cold. The day was then wasted away watching Revenge and chilling out doing nothing. Rod and I did manage to go to the Information Centre and Woolies to stock up on much needed food items.
