18. Lakes Entrance, Sale and Toora

We left Mallacoota, wishing we could stay longer. It was so nice. Excited though to get to Lakes Entrance which I remember as being so nice.

We arrived at Lakes Entrance and found it difficult to find a park. Eventually we found one and walked the few blocks back to Woolies to get some much needed food stock.

Rhys wanted to go for a boogie board so we tried one beach and I chickened out. I am scared of rips and there were no flags and minimal people swimming. So we left and tried main beach. We had to walk across the foot bridge to get to main beach. I spoke with a couple old ladies about the water and they assured me it was pretty safe. So I let the boys go in while Rod and I sat on the beach watching. I froze on the beach in the wind! The boys were mad.

We left Lakes Entrance and decided on a free camp outside Sale. We arrived and set up and made dinner and weren’t overly keen to stay. It was on the highway, a busy one at that, and the toilets were yucky!! So we thought we would travel to the next free camp closer to Sale.

Following the limited directions in the Camp Australia 6 book we finally reached our destination Marlay Yacht Club free camp. We were very sceptical about how far out it was but just as we said (outloud) well, it will probably be quiet and we’ll be the only ones there – guess what? – there were plenty of vans. It was beautiful. Right on Lake Wellington. A tad windy but lovely. We moved our van to a nice flat grassy site and crashed other people’s party! So stayed up chatting to them until late.

We left Marlay Point and visited a tackle shop in Sale (to buy Mitchell’s birthday presents) and had a quick walk around town. We left there heading for Wilsons Promontory and got sidetracked to Port Albert.

Port Albert is the oldest port in Victoria. We visited the maritime museum, which was actually quite good. $10 for the family and the kids got a treasure hunt thing which kept them busy and they even got a chocolate at the end.

We continued on to Foster information Centre to find out about accommodation as The Prom was booked. She convinced us to return to Toora and stay there, which we did. Glad we did the park was great for kids with a pool, tramp, jumping pillow, swings, playground and games room. It was the first real hot day we have had on our trip (about 38°) so Rod and I even went for a swim in the pool and cranked up the air!

Once it cooled off we took a drive up to Agnes Falls and the windfarm. Spectacular views from up there and a lovely drive through the rolling hills and dairy farms. The falls weren’t that great. We drove around town for a quick look, there was nothing much there though.

We challenged the boys to a game of soccer on the soccer table and I am sure we kicked their butts! Twice!

We departed in the morning early to head to Wilsons Promontory
